Treatment

As a Clinical Psychologist I am trained in the use a variety of psychological therapies, however I specialise in Cognitive Behvaioural Therapy (CBT).

CBT is a talking therapy. It is based on the idea that it is not necessarily what happens to us that determines how we feel, but how we think about what has happened to us, that is important in determining how we experience something.

CBT is also based on the fact that we tend get into habits about how we think, and also how we behave in certain situations, and that sometimes these habits lead us into having repeatedly negative feelings and experiences in certain situations.

CBT is a skills based therapy to help children, young people and their families understand and recognise habits they might have developed, and learn different ways of thinking and behaving in order to change negative habits into more positive ones.

CBT treatments last on average between 8-12 sessions depending on circumstances.

CBT is a well researched and evidence based treatment for anxiety and is recognised in guidelines produced by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (www.nice.org.uk). NICE is an independent body developing national guidance on the appropriate treatment and care of people with specific diseases and conditions in the NHS in England and Wales.
